I am convinced that a biosafety laboratory can only fulfil its tasks as containment if the employees working in it are motivated and trained for these tasks. For this reason, I founded the Mertsching Biosafety company in 2024.

About Dr. rer. nat Jürgen Mertsching

Through my career so far, I have acquired an enormous amount of specialist knowledge about biosecurity. I work as head of the biological safety department and various laboratories at the medical school. I also head the genetic engineering department at the Hanover district government and am active as a research assistant in the Institute of Virology at the Max Plank Institute for Biochemistry.

As head of the Safety Service Commission (SISEK) at TWINCORE, Hannover, I was able to successfully implement new concepts for biosafety management from 2006 - 2024. As Chairman of Subcommittee 1 " Fundamental Issues and New Developments" in the Committee on Biological Agents (ABAS) at the Federal Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs, Berlin from 2008 - 2018, I had the opportunity to contribute this practical experience to the discussions of the rule-making and legislative expert bodies.

In 2005 - 2023, I served as an external biosafety consultant in an Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBSC) of the pharmaceutical industry in Belgium and was also a visiting lecturer at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona from 2015 - 2023.

My additional activities in 2016 - 2019 included supporting the establishment of a biorisk management system at the National Public Health Laboratory (NPHL) in Khartoum, Sudan and working as a biorisk management auditor at the Institute National d`Hygiene (INH) Rabat, Morocco, as well as numerous other activities for well-known clients in Germany and abroad.

Since 2005 I have been working as a state-approved trainer for courses according to § 28 of the Genetic Engineering Safety Ordinance (GenTSV).

Recent book contributions on the topics "Biosafety and Biosecurity" and "Primary and Secondary Containment" for Springer Nature and other publishers underline my expertise, which I update regularly.

Seminars, audits and more - biosafety and biosecurity services

I conduct training courses for project leaders and biological safety officers according to § 28 GenTSV as well as advanced training courses according to BioStoffV and TRBA 200. I am also your competent contact for conducting audits according to ISO 35001:2019 "Biorisk management for laboratories and other related organizations".

In addition, I can advise you on the preparation of risk assessments according to BioStoffV and GenTG. I also support you in planning safety laboratories of biosafety levels 1 - 3 (BSL1-3).
